Obtain a provincial nomination
A nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation. If you are in British Columbia, start with the BC PNP.

The top language band, worth the effort if you are already close to CLB 9.

Reach CLB 9 in all four language abilities
CLB 9 is the single biggest lever for most candidates because it raises your core language points and unlocks the higher skill transferability tier.

Canadian experience scores in the core section and again through skill transferability.

Prove French at NCLC 7 or higher
Strong French adds up to 50 points and also qualifies you for French language category draws, which have had much lower cut offs.

Past cut offs are a guide, not a promise. Each round sets its own threshold and category based rounds can go much lower than general rounds.
How the CRS works
Express Entry ranks every candidate in the pool using the CRS, out of a maximum of 1,200 points: up to 500 for core human capital (age, education, official languages and Canadian work experience), up to 100 for skill-transferability combinations, and up to 600 additional points, where a provincial nomination alone is worth 600 and strong French ability is worth up to 50. IRCC invites the highest-ranked profiles in general and category-based draws.
If your estimate sits below recent cut-offs, the score is rarely fixed: language retakes, a spouse switching to principal applicant, French, and provincial nomination are the levers we work with clients on every week, including the BC PNP right here at home.
